So tonight was my last night of the summer semester. I absolutely love grad school, but these classes sucked the life out of me. With 6 hours scheduled of class and Independant Study meetings before, I am definitely in need of a break.
Everything went pretty well for my independant study meeting and the first class. It was the second class that just reminded me how rude and simple minded people can be.
A little back story, the assessment in this class was an annotated bibliography based on an influential educational philosopher. So, I choose Elliot Eisner. For those who don’t know, he is an educational philosopher who is in favor of arts based education. The presentation was an aesthetic response that highlighs the philosophies of the person we had chosen. The projects were actually pretty cool, and I was enjoying the majority of the presentations. One girl actually wrote a poem. She was extremely nervous to read the poem to the class, and when she finished it I told her how amazing it was.
So….now its my turn.
My project was I created a playlist using American musical theatre songs to exemplify Eisner’s ideas. One of my songs was “Will I” from Rent. The girl that read the poem had the audacity to stop me in the middle of my presentation and make a comment about how much she didn’t like the show. I understand that different people have different opinions. What really pissed me off, is that she actually stopped me to make this declaration of disdain. I wanted to look her dead in the eyes and say shut the fuck up, no one interrupted you during your presentation. It didn’t end there, she declared that the show was depressing. To which my hero, aka my professor came to my rescue. Not that I care if people like or dislike RENT I just can’t really see someone saying that it is depressing, I always thought it was uplifting. If the conversation would have actually been intelligent I would have entertained the discussion. But, alas she did not, so I had nothing to say to her except maybe she missed the point and should give the show another shot.
Matt Nathanson and Indigo Girls tomorrow in Central Park…I will post pictures.
